Bathroom renovation

Many Amsterdam homes date from before the war. In those buildings we regularly find timber floors, masonry walls, pipe shafts installed decades ago, and bathrooms fitted into whatever corner of the floor plan was left over. What sits behind the tiles there often differs from what the drawings suggest.

So we survey the room technically first, and inspect it again the moment the old bathroom is out. Moisture, the condition of the structure, the existing pipework and the position of the drain determine what is possible — whether the toilet can be moved, for instance, or whether a level-access walk-in shower can be given enough fall.

A bathroom in an Amsterdam apartment is rarely reached with a van parked at the door. Narrow stairwells, tight lifts, permit parking and sometimes loading and unloading only within set hours: that determines how materials get in and how rubble goes out.

We map this out during the survey and account for it in the schedule, so that walkways stay protected, the neighbours know what to expect, and no days are lost to logistics.
